Game day: Winnipeg Jets at Calgary Flames

The Winnipeg Jets’ A six-game road trip, one that feels like it has lasted forever, finally ends tonight in Calgary, where they take on the Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome.
Winnipeg will be looking to generate any kind of momentum after a frustrating loss in Seattle to the Cracking. The Jets led 3-2 in the third period but couldn’t hold on, allowing three unanswered goals in Thursday night’s 5-3 loss. Alex Iafallo, Mark Scheifele and Kyle Connor found the back of the net, while Connor Hellebuyck had just seventeen shots but only turned aside thirteen. The Jets enter tonight’s game with a 1-4-0 record so far on the road trip.
The Calgary Flames have started the year downright terrible and currently sit in last place in the NHL standings. However, they are coming off a rare bright spot: a 2-0 shutout win over the red-hot team San Jose Sharks on Thursday. Blake Coleman and Samuel Honzek scored, and Dustin Wolf earned First Star honors with a 17-save shutout.

Surprisingly, tonight’s meeting already concludes the season series between these two Canadian rivals. Winnipeg won both previous games, a 2-1 win in Calgary on Oct. 20 and a 5-3 decision at the Canada Life Center on Oct. 24, meaning the teams won’t see each other again until next season.

For the Jets, the focus tonight should be on building momentum and strengthening defensively before returning home for three straight games. This is an opportunity to get back to their structure against a Flames team that is struggling to generate much offensively. Collect two points, leave this road trip in the past and move on. When they are healthy, we know what this group is capable of, and they are almost back to 100% health. But it will take a full team effort and a top performance to end this journey on a positive note.

“We are in the toughest division of the competition” Arniel said after practice on Friday. “And if you happen to look at the standings, they don’t lose too many games, the other teams (in the Central). We want to stay in the pack here. We can’t wait until December or January and decide it’s time to turn it on. It’s too tough a competition. We have to start getting our points right now.”
