Brown (20-6) is a 20-fight UFC veteran who has been competing in the Octagon since 2016, compiling a solid 14-6 record along the way. Despite his longevity and success, he has yet to find himself in title contention. Now, at the age of 35, time is running out for a serious bid for the title, but a win over Bonfim could finally earn him a place in the rankings and re-establish his presence among the division’s elite.
Round 1 – Bonfim immediately took control of the center of the cage, but Brown made an early impression with a sharp jab. Bonfim targeted the lead leg with calf kicks, although Brown responded with kicks of his own rather than simply resetting.
The Brazilian continued to hammer the calf, and while Brown didn’t seem too concerned, he didn’t check them either. A push kick from Brown landed clean, but he ate another calf kick in return. Bonfim has clearly done its homework. Opponents have had success attacking Brown’s legs in the past, and he seemed determined to exploit that weakness again.
Another hard kick briefly tripped Brown, prompting him to raise his leg to defend when he saw the attack coming. Bonfim adapted perfectly, using feints and moves to get Brown in range for more calf kicks before mixing in with punches and straight rights.
As the damage piled up, Brown began to switch stances to protect his lead leg, but Bonfim read the adjustment with ease. Every time Brown returned to orthodoxy to throw power shots, Bonfim would time him and punish him with more kicks.
Brown tried to swing the momentum back with heavy 1-2s and even attempted a flying knee, but accidentally stabbed Bonfim in the eye, forcing a brief 14-second timeout. When the action resumed, Bonfim picked up where he left off and continued to chop off Brown’s legs as the round came to a close.
Round 2 – Brown landed a right hand, then Bonfim scored a 1-2 on him. The exchanges between the two became more intense at this point. Bonfim landed a calf kick that froze Brown for a second, so he landed a second. Brown did too much standing in front of him without causing any offense.
Suddenly, Bonfim landed a knee to the head from close range, causing Brown to fall and the referee to call the fight. Brown immediately got back to his feet and protested the stoppage, but it was too late.
The replay appeared to show that Brown had fallen asleep on the way down, but the landing may have woken him up.
Huge win for Gabriel Bonfim and a big setback for Randy Brown.
