Steveson currently trains under the mentorship of surefire future UFC Hall of Famer Jon Jones. “Bones” has touted Steveson as the next big thing in heavyweight MMA. So far, Steveson has scored three quick first-round knockout victories. Two of those fights were contested under MMA rules, while another took place under the Dirty Boxing Championship banner.
The more impressive the finishes he achieves, the more fans will call him up for the UFC roster. During an interview with MMAFighting.comSteveson said he doesn’t shy away from high expectations.
“There’s no pressure,” Steveson said. “I’ve been to those big places before. I’ve been to a lot of places [it’s like] “Can Gable do it?” and I did it and I rewrote a lot of things for myself. There is no pressure. It’s just another day.
“We show up and we’re trained for pressure. That’s what we’re trained for and pressure produces diamonds. Like I always say, Gable gets money and he gets a lot of it. With those diamonds he will continue to create.”
Steveson will clash with Hugo Lezama on Thursday. The fight will be headlined by “MFL 3” in Mexico. Lezama enters the fight with a pro MMA record of 11-3. He is looking for his first victory since November 2024, when he defeated Victor de Paula at “Budo Sento Championship 26.”
If Steveson ends up in the first round again, many will wonder how long it will be before the Olympic gold medalist receives a contract offer from the UFC. Dana White recently told Jim Rome that he is keeping an eye on Steveson.
