August 7 – Corsican Club Ajaccio, which played in Ligue 1 in 2023, will be relegated to the third level of French football after the club decided to appeal to the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF).

Last month, the DNCG, the financial watchdog of French football, Ajaccio of Ligue 2 relegated after the club had not provided a € 15 million bank guarantee and proof of liquidity. Ajaccio had appealed to the decision for CNOSF until Wednesday, but eventually chose not to pursue the option.

Founded in 1910, the club will now have to present a detailed budget to play in the Championaat National, the third level of the French football pyramid, and retain their professional status.

But there are fears that the club’s crisis can deepen. The club is owned by Ajaccio Imperial Corse Investissement, chaired by the Corsican politician Alain Orsoni, who has insisted on a sale to lawyer Arnau Baqué Roig is close by. As a temporary solution, Orsoni says that he has promised to invest € 2.5 million in the club and to act as a guarantee at the Bank of Scotland for a maximum of € 15 million. “We were almost certain of getting approval, because we fulfilled what was asked of us!” He claimed. “But the committee was of the opinion that this was not enough.”

Local media say that the € 2.5 million is still not deposited and the legitimacy of the € 15 million guarantee has questioned, while the DNCG is expected to make a decision about the national participation of Ajaccio’s Championaat soon.

Relegated with Ajaccio, Boulogne-sur-Mer were promoted to Ligue 2.
