Calvin Bassey could be forgiven to let his status eat as Fulham’s player of last season. Instead, the coveted Center-Back went back to the future to pay it in advance.

Bassey, 25, has financed the renovation and reopening of the Forest Gate Youth Center – where he spent his teenage years – in Eastern London.

It was an environment that would form his determination and encourage to become a football player, let alone win silverware with Rangers and go to the elite division of the English club football.

Since the impression of the European League final of 2022 with that club, Bassey has been broken by the Dutch giant Ajax and for Fulham for a £ 20 million fee two years ago.

However, he has never forgotten how and where it all started – in Forest Gate. The Calvin Bassey Collective was launched last week, organized 90 young people and gave something back to the community.

It is an initiative rooted in community, inclusiveness and empowerment, which promises long -term support for young people in London by investing in safe spaces and creating opportunities, both on and outside the field.

“For me it is special,” Bassey told Mirrorfootball, “because it is a place that I and my friends used to come, collect and just have fun, are just children.

“The center was able to give us certain things that my family did not have. A table tennis table for example.

“I didn’t have that at home, so it can be so easy to play here and play tennis, but when you are here, it is lit.

“So I have good memories with my boys here.”

It has not all been clear to Bassey. As with a number of areas throughout the country, crime has been destroyed and claimed the life of loved ones with which he grew up over the years.

But the heartache acted as an inspiration instead of an obstacle.

“I am just a normal guy and I want to show children that if I can do it, they can do it. That is what I want them to leave with them.

“That is my motivation to improve this safe space with a gym, new astro grass mat and goals for them to play football.

“I want to try to help this place to stay fun and interactive for the children. It’s important for me.

“Growing up I have had friends, I have lost friends and it is important for me not to have other children repeat that cycle.

“Unfortunately we have had children in the area who get involved in Bendemessermis acts. So for me it is my way to tackle it and to give children the inspiration that if one perspective does not work, there are other ways in which you can reach your dream.

“There are other opportunities that are there and for me it ensures that they are focused on what is more important.”

Religion was all important for Bassey as a child and that is still. His both parents made sacrifices – despite their modest start – to ensure that his career could start in Leicester. He is now proud to praise God for His success.

“God is my guide. He protects me. My middle name is Chinedu, which means “God leads.”

“So God leads me and He protects me. And I am so happy that people come out and are so open, show the amazing things that God has done in our lives, you know, because I really believe that without God there would be nothing of this.”

The Shock FA Cup victory of Crystal Palace has acted to inspire clubs outside the top six teams of the Premier League that they too can defeat the elite clubs into silverware in the most competitive competition in the world.

Fulham Kick from the new season to Brighton next month and Bassey is convinced that his side will be one of the clubs that are hungry in the same way to defy the opportunities.

“Last season, the so-called mid-table clubs such as Bournemouth did so well and just show the quality in the Premier League everywhere of position one to position 20.

“We were able to beat Liverpool in April and they became champions. It shows what happens with togetherness and when players really buy what the manager wants- you can achieve everything.”
