When it comes to celebrating the best courses in the world, it’s common to think that the oldest and most historically established courses are more likely to be recognized, but a deep dive into GOLF’s latest rankings of the Top 100 Golf Courses in the World shows that the list is actually fairly evenly split. There are a whopping 45 courses on the list built over the past quarter century, including one, the Upper Course at Childress Hall in Texas, which made its debut this year.
The Old Course at St. Andrews is of course the oldest golf course of them all, with a history of 625 years. The next set of oldest courses predictably come from Britain and Ireland, with opening dates in the mid to late 19th century. The oldest American course on the list is the venerable Chicago, which opened in 1895.
It is perhaps unsurprising that the most productive decades for courses in this year’s rankings are the 1920s and 1930s – the golden age of the game’s architecture, when Donald Ross, Alister MacKenzie and AW Tillinghast delivered classics such as Seminole (Ross); Cypress Point and Royal Melbourne (MacKenzie) and Winged Foot and Baltusrol (Tillinghast). A total of 36 courses on the list come from these two decades.
