From Gatsby to The Matrix: secret Aus locations used in Hollywood films – realestate.com.au

These are fragments from our own backyard that are broadcast all over the world.

A range of East Coast locations including private homes and mansions, mainly in Sydney, have appeared in a range of major Hollywood films.

From postcard landscapes to million-dollar mansions, there are a plethora of both familiar and surprising East Coast film sets making their way onto the big screen.

According to Screen Australia, 2023 was a particularly good year for film production in Australia, with film crews spending a total of $1.2 billion in the country. Films shot in Australia that year included The Fall Guy, Godzilla vs Kong: The New Empire and The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

Here are some of the locations you might walk past without realizing it was a big movie:

EVERYONE EXCEPT YOU

Everyone But You (2023) is set mainly in Sydney and NSW.

Bea’s (Sydney Sweeney) and Ben’s (Glen Powell) meet at The Precinct by Toby’s Estate in Barangaroo until the closing credits at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

In Sydney’s north, a surprising Terrey Hills estate is Claudia and Pete’s parents’ idyllic beachfront home. Atlas of Miracles.

The six-bedroom, eight-bathroom home at 1 Larool Road last sold in 2016 for $7.12 million and was rented for at least $1,000 a week around filming in 2023.

The ‘closest’ beach to the house was North Palm Beach.

The cast set off in the film from Jones Bay Wharf, Pyrmont, to Sydney Harbor next to the Sydney Opera House.

There is also a scene at the end of the film with George Street outside the QVB, while the clifftop wedding was filmed in Marks Park, Tamarama.

THE AUTUMN GUY

In 2023, Hollywood heavyweight Ryan Gosling closed the Harbor Bridge to film the action movie The Fall Guy.

Destination NSW maps these filming locations around the city, including a chase over the bridge, a boat chase through Rushcutters Bay and further scenes set in Circular Quay, Elizabeth Street and Martin Place.

Beaches at Kurnell in the Sutherland Shire also feature in the film.

GREAT GATSBY

Leonardo DiCaprio in The Great Gatsby


Sydney locations were used to recreate 1920s New York in Baz Luhrmann’s 2013 blockbuster The Great Gatsby.

The St Patrick’s College building in Manly, now the International College of Management, served as the exterior of Jay Gatsby’s grand mansion.

The former White Bay Power Station was used as the abandoned Valley of the Ashes and Nick Carraway’s bungalow was built in Centennial Park.

Other locations included Waverley Cemetery, Richmond Polo Club, Rivendell health center in Concord, The King’s School in Parramatta and Breenhold Gardens in the Blue Mountains.

BABE

In the picturesque Southern Highlands, Robertson was the filming location for the beloved Babe (1995) and Babe 2: Pig in the City (1998).

According to Destination NSW, Hoggett’s farm was a setting with a final scene also filmed at Moss Vale Showground.

AUSTRALIA

Australia (2008) by Sydney-born film director Baz Luhrmann included a wide range of locations filmed across the country, with a handful of locations in Sydney.

The historic Camelot homestead, built in 1888 and located in Kirkham Lane Elderslie, was used as the English home of Lady Sarah Ashley (Nicole Kidman) at the start of the film.

Later in the film, the Grade II listed Strickland House in Vaucluse was depicted as Darwin’s Government House in a setting for the ball scene.

THE MATRIX

The sci-fi franchise starring Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, The Matrix, was also captured on the streets of Sydney.

The original film, released in 1999, was one of the first American productions to be shot in Australia.

Some of Sydney’s main landmarks have been edited from film footage to show the scene locations as more general, but viewers may recognize the city’s familiar skyline.

According to Desination NSW, many of the scenes were filmed around the CBD, including the Colonial State Bank Building (where Morpheus was held captive) and the iconic Lloyd Rees Fountain in Martin Place (where the simulated ‘girl in the red dress’ scene takes place).

A helicopter flight scene also provides a bird’s eye view of the city with the iconic skyscrapers below.

PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT

East Coast locations were the focus of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994).

Destination NSW says the film starts and ends in Sydney with scenes at The Imperial Hotel in Erskineville. The pub has been hosting drag shows for over 40 years with a restaurant called Priscilla’s.

Scenes were also shot around Broken Hill and the Palace Hotel, where visitors can even stay overnight in the Priscilla Suite where the characters stayed, depending on destination NSW.

SUPERMAN RETURN

The now largely forgotten 2006 film Superman Returns, starring Kevin Spacey as Lex Luther and Brandon Routh as Clark Kent/Superman, was filmed in parts of southern Sydney.

This included a waterfront home in Sylvania Waters, which was put up for sale in 2009, three years after the film was released in theaters.

The house was used for a scene near the film’s climax, in which Lois Lane, played by Kate Bosworth, has to be rescued in a seaplane.

Film crews rented two James Cook Islands in Sylvania Waters to shoot Bryan Singer’s 2006 film Superman Returns. NSW real estate.

The 2006 film received a lukewarm response from the audiences upon its release.


The Bryan Singer film divided fans upon release and proved influential in a later decision to “reboot” the DC cinematic universe with the release of Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel in 2013, starring Henry Cavill.

The James Cook Island home last sold in 2013 for $3.55 million. An automated valuation by Property.com.au estimated the house is currently worth around $6.18 million.
