Sinner massaged his right thigh during the decision maker.

“This is definitely not the way you want to win,” said Griekspoor. “Brutal circumstances here in Shanghai all week. I thought we were lucky to play without sun in the evening, but two hours and 36 minutes on the clock, in the middle of the third set … I’m sorry for him. I wish him a quick recovery.”

Mpetshi Perricard sent 12 Azen to Fritz’s Nine and took a break in each set while he achieved his first Touro Windings against the American to set up a last 16 meeting with 10th placed Holger Rune.

“It’s the same for every player on the field, but it’s brutal,” said Djokovic about the conditions. “It is brutal if you have more than 80 percent of the humidity day after day, especially for the boys when they play with heat during the day, with sun, it’s even more brutal.”

Djokovic offers a record-expanding fifth title with the Shanghai Masters.

Rune defeated the 21st placed Ugo Humbert 6-4, 6-4; Zizou Bergs region from the 19th placed Francisco Cerundolo 7-6 (1), 6-3; And the 31st placed Gabriel Diallo went through Walkover after David Goffin retired early in the first set.
