Taylor Fritz lost a winner-take-all singles rubber against Carlos Alcaraz during the Laver Cup 2024.
Twelve months later, Fritz came to the top of a similar situation.
In the last singles match on Sunday evening in San Francisco, Fritz Alexander Zverev defeated 6-3, 7-6 (4) to achieve the Laver Cup for Team World and Captain Andre Agassi about Team Europe and Captain Yannick Noah. The world triumphed for the third time in the past four years with a victory of 15-9. If Zverev had prevailed in the last rubber, it would have ended the score on 12-12 and forced a tiebreak set Doubles.
Instead, Fritz has closed his weekend -long heroic deeds in style. On Saturday, the fifth rank American played one of the best matches of his career to make Carlos Alcaraz 6-3, 6-2 upset.
“Only the energy of the team,” Fritz said when he was asked during his interview on the field about why he thrives in these situations. “The moments of winning feel so much better, the moments of losses feel so much worse – because you do it for all these guys. It dismisses me so much; I feel that I play my best tennis in these team environments in these team environments. Just see these guys on the couch, I no longer have it on my well.”
The home team took control of this year’s event by wiping all four games on Saturday and to erase a short 3-1 deficit to take an impressive 9-3 lead on the way to Sunday. The Europeans pushed it to the final of Zverev vs. Fritz by taking two of the first three rubbers, including victories of Alcaraz in both singles and Doubles.
Alex de Minauraur gave Team World his other points on Sunday and beat Jakub Mensik 6-3, 6-4. The Minaur has put together a 3-0 record for the week 2-0 in Singles and 1-0 in Doubles.
Team Europe benefits in the O2 Arena in London in September September.
