Friday’s blog: Houseboat life in wintery Stockholm

We are currently living on a houseboat in wintery Stockholm. The snow has covered both the city and our marina in a thick white blanket. It’s really fun! But perhaps it is a bit different on a houseboat in winter than in a house or apartment…

Winter and snow in Stockholm

Some like winter weather, others don’t. The snow can certainly cause problems, but I’m still one of those who do like really wintery. Unlike the dark and damp misery you normally encounter at two degrees Celsius, at least it is bright and beautiful.

Houseboat life in winter

But what is it like to live on a houseboat in winter? Above all, we think it’s fun! We have pretty good heat inside, and if one day it feels a little cool, we light a fire in the stove. We regularly sweep the gangway free of snow, but the jetty is cleared of snow by the marina.

During the stormy days, the fenders ended up crooked and a wheel broke off under the gangway (which sometimes happens). So we had to reattach the fenders and replace the wheel. Amazingly, we have a shop that specializes in wheels (Tellus) on walking stands!

By the way, the broom we used to sweep snow from the aisle came loose from the handle and disappeared into the depths (it’s ten meters deep here, so if you drop something, it’s usually gone forever). We were happy when we realized that you could buy a new brush, loose without handle, at our nearest ICA. It only cost us 35 crowns and some tinkering to repair a new broom.

Daily life with work, good TV series and other fun

Otherwise we live everyday life now. We work a lot on computers (production of texts and films, handling of advertisements, accounting, etc. etc.) and we also have some meetings, mainly digitally. We have a number of new projects underway, which is fun but takes a lot of time.

To break up the time behind the computers, there will be walks, shopping in the supermarkets and some TV series. We currently have a subscription to Apple TV and that’s where we first saw “Slow Horses”, which we really liked. Now we look at “Pachinko”, a fascinating family story that takes you to Korea and Japan in the 20th century. Very fascinating, while you learn a lot about the history of this part of the world!

Peter also managed to visit his favorite store Taracci, which is now located at Gamla Brogatan in Stockholm. Today, owner and designer Feyo is also a good friend, and on the last visit Peter lingered on some photos that then ended up on Taracci’s Instagram account: @taracciofficial !

This week: Thankful for…

Right now we are grateful for this time of peace and quiet. Being at home for a slightly more coherent period means we have time to catch up on work and take it easy. We are also grateful that we have time and peace to relax with some TV series. And we are grateful that snow makes the world beautiful!

Your turn… What are you grateful for this week?

We now have a nice view.

Next week

We’ll be home a little longer, but the first trip of the year is approaching… It’ll be a slightly shorter trip (just over an hour by plane and just a few days on site) and we’re really looking forward to this little adventure. We will tell you more soon!

For now we wish you a happy Friday and weekend!
