So it was New Year’s Eve! We celebrated that at home in the houseboat, or so we thought. It was a New Year’s Eve with a surprising ending…!
New Year’s Eve at home in Stockholm
We spent New Year’s Eve at home in Stockholm, on our houseboat. The weather was excellent and during the day we walked on Kungsholmen.

The view towards Karlberg Castle was beautiful as usual, and perhaps a little extra beautiful thanks to the sunny weather.

New Year’s Eve dinner
In the evening Peter had planned an extra delicious dinner, but otherwise the plan was simple: we would watch a few episodes of the TV series “Slow Horses”, watch the fireworks and then go to sleep. The menu:
- Starter: Toast with goose rilette (French pate made from goose meat and fat), cornichons and pickled red onion
- Main course: Sous vide cooked deer fillet with celeriac mousse, garlic puree, cognac-flambéed black pepper sauce, cooked carrot and beetroot and fried garlic and carrot strips
- Dessert: Vanilla ice cream with gooseberry jam and mango puree

There were several photos of the main course because it turned out so much fun!

Be sure to look at the carrots and beets! Peter used some kind of “cookie cutter” that he bought online to make the fun shapes.

New Year’s Eve… with a surprising ending
As planned, we watched a few episodes of the TV series, then put on outerwear and brought a glass of bubbly to toast the new year.

Our new (young!) neighbors came to toast with us, together with about 20 people at their party, and then we were invited to the neighbors’ boat… Completely unplanned, we ended up at a party with a DJ, smoke machine, dancing and a large group of young, cheerful people. Not such a stupid start to the new year after all! (And we had to take a very short walk home when we got tired, about ten feet…)

This week: Thankful for…
Yes, where do we start? We are grateful for the past year, with many wonderful trips and exciting projects. We are also grateful that we can live in this nice place, where we can enjoy the water and the views. (It’s definitely fluctuated a little good a lot for a few days, but you have to take it.) Your turn… What are you grateful for this week?

Next week
We will be home in Stockholm for a while before the 2026 trips start. There will be a focus on different types of chores that need to be done, combined with walks and (in the best case) some healthier habits (no, not a New Year’s resolution, but a good opportunity when we are at home). What can you read about here on FREEDOMtravel? We’ll see…
We wish you a happy Friday and a fantastic start to the new year!
