Brooklyn’s parks aren’t quiet during the winter season, and for those looking to get outside as the year comes to a close, there are plenty of activities to enjoy.

We’ve rounded up a selection of free events that offer the chance to explore the borough’s flora and fauna.

It’s a horse of course, Hike and Greet
Prospect Park at Parkside Avenue and South Lake Drive
Saturday, December 20 from 12 noon to 1 p.m

Enjoy a stroll through Brooklyn’s backyard with the horses of the Parks Enforcement Patrol Mounted Unit. Learn about the unit’s work in the park on a tour with the Urban Park Rangers.

Birding: Winter Waterfowl – Solstice Edition
Bush Terminal Park at 43rd Street and 1st Avenue
Sunday, December 21, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m

You can get some tips on the best vantage points for viewing the winter birds that appear in Bush Terminal Park during this event with the Urban Park Rangers. Bird watchers from novice to experienced are welcome at the event.

Art under the bridge: Stippling Seeds
Brooklyn Bridge Park at 334 Furman Street
Sunday, December 21, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m

As part of the Art Under the Bridge series, Brooklyn Bridge Park is hosting a workshop on a technique, stippling, that has been used by botanical illustrators for centuries. The indoor workshop is recommended for adults and teenagers with some drawing experience. This event is first come, first served.

Festival of Lights: Winter Solstice
Sea park at Seba playground
Sunday, December 21 from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM

Come together to celebrate the winter solstice in Marine Park. If you bring binoculars or a telescope, you may have a chance to see the Geminids and Ursids meteor showers.

See what birds fly around Greenpoint on a morning walk McGolrick Park. The free walks are held all year round.

Nature meditation walk
Calvert Vaux Park at Shore Parkway and Rabbi Block Street
Saturday, December 27 from 12 noon to 1 p.m

Unwind before the new year begins with a mindful walk through Calvert Vaux Park with the Urban Park Rangers.
