The Frederick News-Post, a newspaper of six days a week in Frederick, Maryland, is looking for an experienced reporter to cover growth and development.

Frederick County is booming. The school system is expanding with the fastest speed in the state.

You cover the short-term news with regard to growth, such as planning meetings when projects are assessed, as well as the Big-Picture look. How much development will there be? How fast? What are the many consequences? What do developers, contractors, environmental activists, government officials, local residents and others think?

This beat will focus on development projects that are under the view of the city of Frederick and Frederick County, as well as smaller municipalities, which have also planned various large projects.

You will also look at the current housing market, in which prices have been shot up in recent years. The demand is high and the supply is low. There are many fascinating stories and trends by using the real estate world.

The Beat also includes incidental reporting about two municipalities. We have split the 12 municipalities of the province among our staff of the news report of six.

Qualified candidates have at least two years of reporting experience. They will be very motivated and resourceful enough to find story ideas. They will work with a cooperation spirit under daily deadline pressure. Must be internet/social media -savvy and be able to take photos for publication.

Ideal candidates will have: curiosity, determination, the desire to constantly know more, the wisdom not to accept. They will be skeptical about closed meetings and not deterred when government officials place roadblocks on public registers. They will call the extra phone call, ask the extra question. They will dive on a complex subject and make a fast, tight lede in their heads as news breaks.

They regard journalism as very fun, but also as a calling and a public service.

A bachelor’s degree, preferably in journalism, English or a related program, is preferred. Must have excellent grammatical skills and knowledge of AP style.

Must have a vehicle that is suitable for passing through the province. Must have a valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving history without suspensions.

The normal schedule is from Monday to Friday, with a few night shifts, in particular to cover meetings. You are part of a weekend and holiday position.

Send a letter of application to apply (explain why journalism and Frederick are for you), CV, salary requirements and work monsters to jobs@newspost.com. CVs submitted without an application letter and the salary requirements will not be assessed.
