BKFC 82 did not feature the return of Frankie Edgar’s martial arts as initially advertised.
The former UFC lightweight champion was scheduled to face Jimmie Rivera at the Prudential Center in Newark. ‘The Answer’ was belatedly removed from the card and many rumors swirled about the situation.
Speak with MMAFighting.comBKFC boss David Feldman explained the decision to withdraw Edgar without commenting on specific medical data.
“Honestly, I don’t even know if he wants to fight us again,” Feldman said. “I think he’s a little mad at us, which maybe he should be, but at the end of the day we have his best interests at heart. He’s getting a very, very respectable check. I don’t think he’s mad at us for that.”
“I think he’s mad at us for depriving him of an opportunity. Again, sometimes you have to save fighters from themselves, and I’m not saying we saved Frankie from himself, but I’m saying for that night our medical team wasn’t prepared for that and that’s why. Will we revisit it? We’ll definitely talk to him if he’s interested, we’ll definitely dive deep, and if we can make it happen, we will.”
The world of bare-knuckle boxing is known to tempt the stars of the past. Edgar would be another name added to that list, but there were many concerns leading up to “The Answer’s” scheduled fight. Edgar admitted that members of his own family were initially hesitant when they heard about his return.
Now that they’ve prepared for a fight that didn’t happen, many are wondering what Edgar will decide to do. It could come down to what Edgar is offered and what promotion would allow him to fight. Edgar has not yet commented on what happened with his canceled BKFC 82 fight.
