James Trafford (£ 5.0 million) has returned to Manchester City in a movement that will intrigue Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers – especially given his price.
After a few excellent versions for Burnley last season, he is, in the words of the city, “one of the most coveted young keepers who are active in Europe”.
The transfer costs of £ 31 million are a British record for a goalkeeper. That amount overshadows the £ 30 million Everton eight years ago Sunderland for Jordan Pickford.
But will he become the new number one in the city and offer FPL managers a bargain route to the backline of the Cityzens? We are investigating our moving goal article.

Trafford’s is a rare case of a player who comes to the city for emotional as much as financial reasons. The 22-year-old spent eight years on the City Academy and played next Cole Palmer (£ 10.5 million), Jadon Sancho (£ 6.0 million), Liam Delap (£ 6.5 million) and Morgan Rogers (£ 7.0 million).
During his development he had a loan in Accrington Stanley and two with Bolton Wanderers. All the while he developed the physical side of his game and grew in his 6ft 5 -frame.
Many predicted a big future for the Shot stopper, but he thought he had to leave the city in 2023 to pursue opportunities for the first team. The Cityzens, as recognition for his enormous potential, add a buy-back clause when they sold it to Burnley for £ 14 million.
That summer, Trafford England helped to win the European championship under the age of 21. He did not give a goal throughout the tournament and improved his reputation as a good penalty butt with a late Spot-Kick Save in the final that preserved a 1-0 victory for Lee Carsley’s side. In fact, he can be saved three of the eight fines that he has confronted in the competition.
Trafford’s first season in Turf Moor was a baptism of fire. He only held two clean sheets and gave 62 goals in 28 performances before he received the ax for the last nine games of the campaign.
But the young ‘keeper has gained valuable experience under Vincent Kompany, where he was encouraged to play from behind. That is in accordance with the Pep Guardiola philosophy under which he was raised in the city.
Last season, under Scott Parker, Trafford turned out to be maturity. He played a major role in Burnley, the championship record for the least goals that were admitted, and only sends 16 goals in 45 performances.
He also held a remarkable 29 clean sheets and went 12 games at a certain stage without admitting once. That is a record that was once defeated by Manchester United in England. In one of those matches – a scoreless draw with Sunderland – Trafford saved two penalties from Wilson Isidor (£ 5.5 million). It is not surprising that the EFL has mentioned him in the Team of the Year of the Division.

2023/24 V 2024/25: Chalk and cheese

The best context for viewing his improvement in the past two seasons is to compare how many goals Trafford would be expected to be admitted to his “expected goals on goal” (XGOT). This metriek regards the quality of the on-target attempts that a keeper has had to deal with, taking into account factors such as bargain and the angle from which the shot was taken.
In the Premier League, the Saving percentage of Trafford was 63.1% and his goals were a total of -7.
Last season he placed a savings percentage of 84.5% and his goals prevented the total waved to +12.9 – an extraordinary transformation. He only gave 16 goals when his XGOT was 28.9.
Trafford’s enormous improvement
| Season | To rescue % | Xgot | Goals admitted | Prevent goals |
| 2023/24 | 63.1 | 55 | 62 | -7 |
| 2024/25 | 84.5 | 28.9 | 16 | 12.9 |
There is the feeling that Trafford has improved in many facets of his game. He is calmer in one-on-one situations, weakens his time before he makes the decision to set up the attacker or adjust his positioning to limit his target.
His control positioning has also been improved, so that he can respond faster to making rescues, while his distribution will be particularly impressed by Guardiola. Last season Burnley was a ball-dominant team, not the low-block outfit synonymous with Sean Dyche, and so Trafford contributed to building from the back with numerous fast, short passes on his teammates. Perfect exercise for how City likes to play.
The elephant in the room is the fact that the Breakout season of Trafford entered the championship. And the gap between the top flight and the second layer is huge. We must make surcharges for the fact that the new signing of the city was a large fish in a small pond. Will he sink or swim in the Premier League?
Will Trafford Ederson move?

Even if Trafford thinks he is a world -class goalkeeper, he is not there yet. Or at least, he has not yet proven that he is at the highest level. So the question of £ 5.0 million will Guardiola give him that chance next season? Can the city manager take that risk when the drug points are so in the modern Premier League title race?
There is not much in the way of friendly competitions for the season to give us a clearer idea of the way Pep leans. City only plays once, against Palermo on August 9.
If Guardiola decides to trust his new signature, he is an absolute must-have in FPL. By the end of last season, the city improved defensively and held six clean sheets in the last nine games. And they have now Rod (£ 6.5 million) back in the fold, which further strengthens their midfield vertebra with Tijjani Reijnders (5.5 m).
Despite the absence of the Spaniard, City had the best defense of the fourth fourth in the division last season. They were also only one clean sheet short of the best clean laymen from Liverpool: also:
A better protected and much improved Trafford in a title-challenging city side would be a premium keeper for a bargain.
However, we just can’t be sure that he will start. We leave the last word to the usually well -informed Simon BajkowskiThe Chief Manchester City writer at The Manchester Evening News:
“Stefan Ortega is expected to leave Manchester City after the arrival of James Trafford in the club. The former city young comes with eyes again at the no. 1 place.
“That position is still in the possession of Edererson, who will go into a ninth season as Pep Guardiola’s preferred keeper despite further speculation in the summer that he could leave again. After he had almost gone to the Saudi Pro League last summer, there was more interest and Galatasaray to keep the Brazilian.”
