Four rules all golfers must follow

Four rules all golfers must follow

Golf comes with a huge rule book – and let’s face it, some of those rules can be confusing for golfers of all levels. From quirky quirks like the ‘Water Bottle Rule’ to really helpful things like the ‘Leaf Rule’. If you don’t know the ins and outs, you can get penalized and create tension among the people you’re playing with. And while many rules are strictly enforced, there is still a set of unwritten rules of golf that every golfer is expected to follow. So the Rainmakers Golf crew brought in two longtime caddies to find out which ones matter most. This is what they said.

The unwritten rules of golf that you must always follow

Caddies have seen it all: broken bats, thrown wedges, cheerful trash talk and even the occasional scuffle. If anyone understands the do’s and don’ts of the game’s unwritten etiquette, it’s them. On a recent trip to Florida, our caddies refreshed us on the rules players should never break.

1. Keep your comments to yourself

A caddy’s first piece of advice: don’t try to play therapist.

“Too often we see someone trying to comfort a partner after a bad shot when you know he or she is already upset,” he said.

Translation: If you’re tempted to say something, don’t.

2. One golfer, one ball search

Another caddy said players should stop recruiting the entire group to chase a ball.

“If you’re looking for a foul shot in the rough or in the woods, stick to the one-man-one-ball mentality,” he explained. ‘You don’t have to search with three people.’

It keeps the round moving – and that your friends don’t silently resent you.

3. Respect the course

Etiquette goes beyond just people; it also includes the terrain itself.

“Always replace your divots and repair your ball marks,” said one caddy. “It’s frustrating to see players skipping these responsibilities.”

If you make a mess, clean it up.

4. Keep pace with the group at the front

Pace of play is always a hot topic, and one caddy emphasized that golfers need to know their skills and play accordingly.

“Choose the right T-shirts, skip the mulligans and breakfast balls and don’t be afraid to pick up when you’re down,” he said.

The goal: to stay with the leading group and not outrun the group behind.
