Umass Lowell has announced the hiring of Josh Holmstrom as the new director of the Hockey Operations program.

A former River Hawks stand out when a player and double captain, Holmstrom returns to his Alma Mater with a diverse background in operations, coaching and professional game.

“It is with great joy that we can bring Josh back to our program,” said River Hawks head coach Standard Bazin in a statement. “As a two -time captain, Josh embodied the definition of consistency and selflessness. Josh was able to be a great player here while he dragged people together with him. He is passionate about the program and that love will strengthen our culture.

“We are pleased to bring him back home.”

Holmstrom recently served as an assistant coach at Air Force, where he played a key role in coordinating practical plans, implementing game strategies and contributing to team success on faceoffs and special teams through video sessions and film failure. This work helped the Falcons to reach a 21% Power Play -Succe percentage in 2023 – their highest figure since 2010 – and a 54% FaceOFF Win Rate, arranged in seventh place. He also took responsibilities on hockey operations at Air Force, actively contributes to practicing organizational and game strategies and achieved all off-item Logistics, team trips and video preparation.

“I am very excited and honored to return to the Umass Lowell hockey team,” said Holmstrom. “This time it will be different, as a member of the staff, but this is a great opportunity. I am very proud of what we have achieved as a program while playing and I am now looking forward to continuing the success of Umass Lowell Hockey.”

In addition, Holmstrom brings valuable head coaching experience of the EHL’s Walpole Express, where he led the team to a championship – the first in the history of the organization – and helped more than a dozen players to collegial hockey.

From 2010 to 2014, Holmstrom played for the River Hawks and earned Captain Honors as a junior and senior while he received several team and university prizes, including the Unsung Hero Award (2012, 2013, 2014), Gus Coutu Award (2014) and Jon Hellstedt Spirit of Service Award). After graduating, he played professionally in the AHL and Echl for six seasons, and appeared together in more than 360 games.

Holmstrom graduated from Umass Lowell in 2014 and obtained a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in management and marketing.
