The former top referee has now made his appeal regarding these incidents in the Manchester City – Newcastle United match.

Dermot Gallagher looks at what happened during key moments in this match at the Etihad.

United ultimately loses 2-1.

So what about these ‘controversial’ incidents…

Dermot Gallagher in conversation Air sports about these controversial incidents between Manchester City and Newcastle and United:

INCIDENT:

Lewis Hall’s goal for Newcastle could have been offside as Joe Willock potentially interfered with play while in Gianluigi Donnarumma’s sight.

DERMOT GALLAGHER:

“This is the most difficult part of interpreting offside. The assistant will say that Willock is in an offside position. The referee can see the line of sight and will say that he is not in the goalkeeper’s line of sight. The goalkeeper has a good view of the ball.”

INCIDENT:

Bernardo Silva avoided a red card for a second yellow card after his challenge on Dan Burn. Silva was shown a yellow card and wasn’t even looking at the ball when he deliberately lunged into Burn who was in the air less than a minute later. The referee bottled up the decision to give a very clear second yellow card.

DERMOT GALLAGHER:

“Bernardo Silva is taking a chance there, it’s a reckless challenge.

“He’s not looking at the ball.

“The ball is not there.”

INCIDENT:

Dan Burn scored for Newcastle but the goal was disallowed for offside despite being pushed into the position by Ruben Dias.

DERMOT GALLAGHER:

“Dias commits a foul before the ball is in play, so it cannot be penalized.

“It’s bad luck.”
