Dermot Gallagher discusses controversial decisions in the Premier League on behalf of Sky Sports after every round.

The former top referee has now made his appeal regarding these incidents in the Burnley – Newcastle United match.

Dermot Gallagher looks at what happened during key moments in this match at Turf Moor.

United eventually wins 3-1.

So what about these ‘controversial’ incidents…

Dermot Gallagher in conversation Air sports about these controversial incidents between Burnley and Newcastle United:

INCIDENT:

Burnley wanted Joelinton sent off but the referee only gave a free kick and not a second yellow card when he fouled Armando Broja during Burnley’s break.

DERMOT GALLAGHER:

“Certainly not [second yellow and a] red card, a foul on the halfway line has different consequences than a foul further down the field.

“That foul prevented Broja from getting the ball, but he ends up in traffic. He has no green space in front of him. But further down the field it’s a completely different decision, there are too many variables.”

INCIDENT:

Burnley wanted Yoane Wissa’s goal disallowed for a Bruno Guimaraes challenge on Josh Laurent as the ball fell loose in the six-yard box and the Burnley defender tried to prevent Bruno from getting to the loose ball.

DERMOT GALLAGHER:

“If that is given as a foul, it should be the referee’s choice.

“The first thing he will say to the VAR is: ‘I don’t think there is enough, I think Guimaraes is holding, if you like, the player went over too easily’.

“That will be his decision.”

Especially after the series of shock decisions that didn’t go Newcastle’s way against Chelsea and Man U, it was time for Eddie Howe’s side to get a favorable decision (or two).

Joelinton’s was never going to be a red card and Wissa’s, it’s one where the defending team will hope they get a bit of a soft decision.

Fortunately the referee held firm.

Anyway, the point was, on the night this referee made a lot of physical things happen for both sides, some challenges that would normally stop the game, but instead kept it flowing.
