Introduction: “Absolute Chaos”: Former England striker in Liverpool’s new system
The new system of Liverpool have left fans with mixed feelings. a former England striker who describes the Reds’ new system as ‘absolute chaos’. The comment followed another disappointing performance under Arne Slot.
Liverpool system under the microscope
Since the start of the campaign, Slot has tried to deviate from Jurgen Klopp’s high standards. Liverpool have instead used a free-flowing, possession-based approach, alternating between 3-2-4-1 and 4-3-3 in a match. On paper it seems like an exciting idea, but the truth is far from consistent.
The former England striker wasn’t shy about speaking out after Liverpool’s recent match. He called the new system a proof of ambition, but said it “causes confusion” for players who have not yet found their place.
The new system is also justified because it moves higher up, with the midfielders constantly rotating. and full-backs pushing into the middle half-spaces. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dominik Szoboszlai were fast at times. But others don’t seem to be able to handle the rapid transitions.
Some players, including Ibrahima Konaté and Ryan Gravenberch, have been moved out of position, leading to defensive collapses that have cost Liverpool valuable points.
My thoughts
In my opinion, Slot needs some patience. It will take time to transition from Klopp’s high-pressing to a tactical formation. But criticism is not unreasonable: Liverpool need to get their act together at the back and get each player, on an individual basis, fully understanding what their role is.
