Former Blue Jay Nick Sandlin signs a minor league deal with Angels

On Monday afternoon, Orange County Register Jeff Fletcher reported that the Angels have signed Nick Sandlin to a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training. Earlier this season, the Blue Jays cut the right-handed pitcher, making him a free agent.

The Angels have signed RH reliever Nick Sandlin to a minor league deal with an invitation to spring training. Sandlin, 29, appeared in 19 games for TOR last season, with a 2.20 ERA. Career 3.19 ERA in parts of five MLB seasons.

Sandlin was acquired by the Blue Jays along with Andrés Giménez during the 2024 Winter Meetings. He had posted a 3.75 ERA in both 2023 and 2024, but had an FIP of around 5 in both seasons. Sandlin’s best season before joining the Jays was in 2022, when he had a 2.25 ERA and 3.68 FIP in 44 innings pitched.

When healthy, Sandlin was solid in 2025, finishing the season with a 2.20 ERA and 4.60 FIP in 16.1 innings pitched. After eight innings over ten appearances, Sandlin was placed on the injured list. Sandlin returned after two months, but only pitched eight and a third innings with the Jays before hitting the injured list again and spending the remainder of the season on the shelf.

There are two more former Blue Jay pitchers who have joined the Angels this season. Starter Alek Manoah signed with the team in early December after missing the entire 2025 season while recovering from Tommy John. The 28-year-old is still searching for the form he had in 2022 when he finished as a finalist for the American League Cy Young award.
Former Blue Jay closer Jordan Romano also signed with the Angels in December. The 32-year-old went undrafted by the Jays in 2024 and pitched for the Phillies in 2025. In 49 games, Romano had an 8.23 ERA and 5.39 FIP in 42.2 innings, his second consecutive season with an increased ERA.

All three pitchers join former Blue Jays starter Yusei Kikuchi, who pitched with the team from 2022 to 2024. After being traded to the Houston Astros before the 2024 deadline, Kikuchi signed with the Angels last offseason.
