Former Blue Jay Derek Law signs a minor league deal with the Diamondbacks

The 2019 season for the Toronto Blue Jays has been a strange year, and one of the cornerstones of the bullpen has found a new home.

It was reported on Wednesday that right-handed pitcher Derek Law has signed a minor league deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks, with their Triple-A team, the Reno Aces, confirming it on Friday.

Lay down the law ⚖️ The @dbacks have signed RHP Derek Law to a Minor League Free Agent Contract with an invitation to Spring Training!

This isn’t the first time Law has been part of an organization in the National League West, as he was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the ninth round of the 2011 draft. In 2016, he made his debut for the Giants, posting a 2.13 ERA and 2.53 FIP in 55 innings. He couldn’t find that same success in either 2017 or 2018, and Law was traded early in the 2019 season.

On April 2, 2019, the rebuilding Jays sent fan favorite Kevin Pillar to the Giants in exchange for Law, Alen Hanson and Juan De Paula. The latter never pitched in the big league, while Hanson had a cup of tea after the trade. Law, on the other hand, posted a 4.90 ERA and 4.85 FIP in 60.2 innings pitched, earning five saves and eight holds.

At the end of the season, Law was a non-tender, and due to the global pandemic, Law did not pitch again until the 2021 season. The right-handed pitcher played in just nine games with the Minnesota Twins in 2021, then played in 17 games in 2022 with the Detroit Tigers and Cincinnati Reds.

It was with the Reds where Law had his first good season since his rookie year, posting a 3.60 ERA and 4.62 FIP in 55 innings pitched, playing in a total of 54 games. Law continued that success in 2024, finishing the season with a 2.60 ERA and 3.32 FIP in 90 innings pitched.

Unfortunately, Law missed the entire 2025 season due to flexor tendon surgery, hence the minor league deal. Law will join former Blue Jays Gabriel Moreno and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. into the Diamondbacks organization, although Gurriel Jr. is likely out for the entire 2026 season.
