Former Indian captain Anil Kumble has heaped praise on it Shubman Gill with the way the latter has performed in recent times with his performances in red ball cricket. Gill has done well both with the bat and on the field since being appointed as the full-time Test captain.
Kumble praised Gill’s batting, which has only improved in the red-ball format since being handed the leadership mantle. The veteran leg-spinner also praised Gill’s performance with the bat on Day 2 of the second Test against West Indies in Delhi.
“Captainting India is never easy. It is not just about decisions on the field but also about handling various responsibilities off it and Shubman has done exceptionally well. On the field he has done exceptionally well and as a batsman he has shown great composure since taking over the captaincy. Today was no different. He read the situation perfectly, attacked the spinners when required and maintained the scoring rate,” said Kumble via JioHotstar.
For a young captain, scoring points is essential. “Normally, experienced players inherit the captaincy after years of establishing themselves, but for Shubman, the fact that he gets up early and performs well shows great maturity and bodes well for India’s future,” he added.
Ex-West Indies batsman Daren Ganga echoed Kumble’s sentiments on Gill’s independent role as batsman and captain. Ganga concluded by saying that he believes Gill will lead Indian cricket in the coming years.
“It defines him as a player – his quality, temperament and ability to make his starts count. His success rate this year has been impressive. He has handled that extra responsibility remarkably well, separating his role as a batsman from his role as captain. He has not interfered with the other and is reaping the rewards. All credit to him. Shubman Gill leads well, bats with confidence and looks set to be at the helm for a long time to come. Indian cricket.” he said.
India played their first series against Gill’s captaincy for England in what was a historic achievement for Gill and the team. Ultimately, he broke several records, scoring 754 runs in five matches and emerging as the leading run-getter. The 26-year-old carried the form into the home series against the West Indies, registering an unbeaten 129-run knock-off and 196 balls during his team’s first innings of the New Delhi Test.
