Joao Fonseca broke a three-match losing streak on ATP Masters 1000 level on the Cincinnati Open on Thursday, where he shook a mistakes-sewn set to continue to the second round.
The #nextgenatp Brazilian made 18 casual mistakes in a shaky opener against Buyunchaokete, but he eventually found his reach to score a 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory first at this level since Madrid in April. With his two -hour, 19 -minute triumph, Fonseca released a powerful roar when he became the youngest competition winner in Cincinnati since Borna Coric and Jared Donaldson in 2015.

“I was struggling a lot, missed a lot of shots, did not feel my best today,” Fonseca said after his first Lexus ATP Head2head allocation with the Chinese number 1. “I stayed in the game and believed that I would find the chance, and I got it. I am very happy with how I believed.”
After reaching the third round in Wimbledon, Fonseca returned to Hard-Court action in Toronto last week, but was in his opener Van Streek through the Australian Tristan Schoolkate, who supplied a clinical serving version. However, it was Fonseca’s own serving bravery who pulled him against Buyunchaokete and won 17 from 18 points behind his first delivery, according to Infosys ATP statistics, in the last set.
In the second round on his Cincinnati debut, Fonseca will be confronted with the recent finalist of Washington and number 19 in the PIF ATP ranking, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The Spaniard, aimed at debuting the Nitto ATP Finals, is 11th in the PIF ATP Live Race to Turin after three championship photos this year.
The Cincinnati Open underwent a large transformation in 2025, which is expanding to a 12-day event of 96 players, which coincides with a campus renovation of $ 260 million. This expansion is intended to improve both player and fan experiences.
In other early action on day 1 in Ohio, Arthur Rindernech moved past Nuno Borges to make a second round meeting with 11th Seed Casper Ruud. The Norwegian reached the fourth round in Toronto, but fell at Karen Khahanov, who is in the final of Thursday against the American Ben Shelton.
