Flight cancellations snowballing at San Francisco Airport due to snowstorm in the Northeast

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — Flight cancellations piled up at San Francisco International Airport on Sunday as a major snowstorm lashed the Northeast, closing airports and making travel treacherous.

“That means we could see branches and trees falling on highways, drifts and whiteout conditions. Incredibly dangerous. Do not travel tonight,” New Jersey Governor-elect Mikie Sherrill said.

“They say the earliest flight I could get would be Thursday. Today is Sunday,” Sarah Chan said.

Chan tries to get home to Boston, but doesn’t have much luck.

“I’ll just fly to Toronto and hopefully I can find my way there. Hopefully I’ll take a bus, 15 hours or something,” Chan said.

“We toured San Francisco, sightseeing, I didn’t watch TV,” James Rigney said.

Rigney from Australia knew nothing about the snowstorm in the east. So for now he’s stuck at SFO.

‘I haven’t noticed it yet. We’re going to find out what we can do to recover the rest of our holiday. I think the New York thing is screwed up,” he said.

The SFO duty manager said there were almost 70 cancellations and 140 delays as of Sunday afternoon.

On top of the cancellations and delays, there was some confusion among travelers after the Department of Homeland Security reversed its decision to suspend the TSA’s PreCheck and Global Entry programs due to what the agency described as a funding error.

On Sunday, DHS said: “At this time, TSA Precheck remains operational with no changes for the traveling public. If staffing limitations arise, TSA will evaluate on a case-by-case basis and adjust operations accordingly.”

ABC News said the reversal comes after input from the White House and an outcry from the public.

“Unfortunately, I wasn’t part of that outrage. I was at a conference, but it’s shocking. That’s so irresponsible,” said LA traveler Susan Sheu.
