A lot of attention was paid on social media to the return of Kobbie Mainoo for the match against Burnley, the first match since the dismissal of Ruben Amorim.

The young midfielder was keen to leave the club on loan after the former manager indicated that the only way he would get game time this season, in a World Cup year, was to replace our best player and captain, Bruno Fernandes.

When Bruno suffered a rare injury, it seemed like it was a good time for Mainoo to step up and show what he could do, but unfortunately he suffered a blow during training.

While it was always suggested that Kobbie would only be out for a few games, conspiracy theories circulated online that the player had made himself available because Amorim was away.

Speaking to the media ahead of this weekend’s cup tie against Brighton, interim manager Darren Fletcher has spoken about Mainoo’s state of mind.

He seems to be in a good place. Kobbie doesn’t give you much [indication]so you wouldn’t know if he was in a good place or not so good. That’s the way he is, that’s his natural way of doing things. But I know him well, and I’ve known him for a long time, and I’ve seen him in the building and in different places throughout the season. Not so much about the building, but you see people around. And I’ve had conversations with him in general. But he’s in a good place. I know Kobbie, and I think he knows me, and he knows Travis Binnion, so he’s comfortable in his environment. So he’s in a good place. He’s trained well and, like I said, he’s hard to read, Kobbie, so that remains to be seen.
