The Los Angeles Kings made a quick pit stop at home before hitting the road again, welcoming the Calgary Flames, along with the only California-born goaltending tandem in the NHL, to Crypto.com Arena on Saturday night.
Despite the ability to dominate 5-on-5 and control most of the game, it took until overtime for the Flames to pick up two points. sneak past the Kings 2-1.
Summary of the game
Samuel Helenius and Adam Klapka wasted no time in powering the building, dropping their gloves from the first confrontation for a killer tilt that saw two big bodies going at it.
In a period where the puck was largely devoted to the Flames’ sticks, the Kings were opportunistic and took a 1-0 lead into the intermission. Alex Laferriere showed incredible patience, stopping at the hash marks before finding Adrian Kempe across the ice for a one-timer that beat Dustin Wolf with high gloves.
Just over six minutes into the second period, the Kings got their first power play of the game. The Kings were in last place in the league and held true to that position when Kevin Fiala gave Blake Coleman the opportunity to go all alone against Darcy Kuemper. Coleman took advantage and evened things out for the Flames.
The Flames continued to throw as much as they could toward the net, racking up 37 shots, but Kuemper held firm, allowing the Kings to extend that shot into overtime, a scenario that has become all too familiar for the Black and White this season.
Anze Kopitar thought he had the win, deflecting the puck off his foot early in overtime, but it was called back for a kicking move.
Seconds later, the Flames did what they should have been able to do in regulation when Morgan Frost found the back of the net on a pass from Jonathan Huberdeau for the overtime winner.
The Kings head to Texas on Monday to take on the Dallas Stars, while the Flames remain in the state of California ahead of a matchup with the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday.
