Flames could still make two major trades ahead of the Olympic break

Rasmus Andersson’s last few seasons with the Calgary Flames have been an interesting time. It was a back-and-forth affair filled with lingering uncertainty that the righty would re-sign with the organization. Ultimately, the organization and the player decided to go their separate ways, culminating in a trade with the Vegas Golden Knights.

With the Flames near the bottom of the Western Conference, everyone has moved on, and now the trade rumors have shifted to veterans Nazem Kadri and Blake Coleman.

Kadri is the Flames’ piece attract the most attentionaccording to Darren Dreger on the Barn Burner podcast. He wouldn’t just be a rental, as he is still under contract at $7 million per year through the 2028-2029 season. Although his best years are behind him, the two-way center is still on pace for a 58-point season against an offensively depleted Calgary team. He also has a Stanley Cup from his time with the Colorado Avalanche.

Flames Trade Rumors: Nazem Kadri and Blake Coleman

Colorado is one of the teams that could be an interesting reunion for Kadri as they look for some additional center depth. Another possible option for Kadri is a return to the Toronto Maple Leafs, who are still looking for a playoff win despite issues and injury concerns.

Coleman is an option that costs much less. He makes $4.9 million per year, with only one season left on the books after this. He is on pace for 22 goals, which would be the second-best season of his career. However, he is currently on injury reserve.

Both players will be popular if they are made available. Their respective salaries could play a major role in the bidding war that follows, as not every team will have the cap space to add someone like Kadri.

The Flames don’t want to keep their salary

The problem the Flames have with two of these higher-priced contracts is that they have already used two of their retention spots on Andersson and Jacob Markstrom. If they want to trade both contracts, they’ll have to find a team willing to pay full price for either one. The obvious choice to keep is Coleman, but as the cheaper of the two players, the Flames may not need to do that.

When it comes to Kadri, since most teams are in a cap crunch, it will be an interesting storyline to make the math work.
