Flames 7 game check-in: The road to Gavin McKenna has begun

We’re officially starting a new series, taking a look at the Calgary Flames every seven games. This will run throughout the 2025-2026 season, reflecting on the team’s highs and lows during that period.

It’s safe to say the Flames couldn’t have had a worse start to the regular season. With the team currently sporting a miserable 1-6-0 record, fans are already looking ahead to the 2026 NHL Draft and its crown jewel, Gavin McKenna. As the team continues to struggle, the dream of landing the first overall pick only becomes more real.

The highlights

Let’s be honest: There isn’t much to admire from the Flames through these seven games. If anything, the main thing that keeps the fanbase engaged is the idea of getting a top pick in a strong 2026 draft.

Although it’s still early, the Flames have taken a real nosedive from last season. Their success the previous year was unsustainable and it was only a matter of time before the team showed who they really were.

The Flames’ only win came in a shootout against provincial rivals in their first game of the season. However, we can all admit that the Flames got incredibly lucky during that game, and in reality it should be 0-7-0 now.

The lows

Oh boy, where do we even start? It seems like the problems the Flames had last season are still there and looking worse so far. Their biggest problem is the lack of fouls. Since their win in Edmonton, the Flames have not scored more than two goals per game and currently rank last in the NHL in goals per game, with 1.57.

In terms of goaltending, Dustin Wolf failed to save the team this time. He is currently 1-5 and has a save percentage of .866, resulting in a 3.86 goals-against average. Those are obviously pretty ugly numbers, but honestly, Wolf has gotten little to no help from his team and has spent many nights on the sidelines so far. It is proven by the fact that the Flames’ goal difference through seven games is -15.

Overall, it was an ugly start to the Flames’ regular season. Their offense is bone dry, their defense is weak and they currently have the best chance of finishing first. This poor start is more of a blessing than a curse, as it proves that the Flames need elite talent in their organization to take that next step.

The way forward

Here are the next seven games scheduled for the Flames. They’ll be in action tonight against the red-hot Montreal Canadiens and will be on a four-game road trip, including a back-to-back.

October 22: vs. MTL

October 24: @ WPG

October 26: USA Nyr

October 28: @TOR

October 30: @OTT

November 1: @NSH

November 2: @ PHI
