Batavia, NY – Despite being in a bad spot late in the mile amid heavy road traffic that could have cost her a win in the running races, Summer Slash (Down on the coast) got a masterful send in the late stages of the race to win the recommended $11,800 Class-AA Open Handicap for fillies and mares on Wednesday evening (Oct. 29) at Batavia Downs.
Summer Slash (Ray Fisher Jr.) came away fifth as Delta Three N (Jim McNeight Jr.) and Tres Chic Bluechip (Joe Chindano Jr.) traded leads during the 28.2 first quarter. Once at the point, Tres Chic Bluechip soon faced an outside flow before half time, led by Rightfully Mine (Kyle Swift) and supported by Gia’s Surreal (Kevin Cummings) and Summer Slash, who came across third into the wind.
Positions remained unchanged until three-quarters, but as the race made its way through turn four, Rightfully Mine was running around the leader and Gia’s Surreal had spun around both of them three wide. But instead of going four wide from his cover, Fisher sent Summer Slash three positions down into the passing lane, where the mare rocketed through and beat the rest of the girls by a length to the line in 1:55.1, blowing up the backboard 10-1.
It was the sixth win of the year for Summer Slash ($23.04), owned by Ilovemyharnesshorsesummer and trained by Ryan Swift.
SUMMER SLASH REPEAT
Drew Monti and Joe Chindano Jr. both had hat tricks, while coach Shawn McDonough had two wins on the night.
