The tragic incident took place around 7 p.m. on Sunday, August 17 in the village of São Francisco de Assis when the crew hurried to tackle a fire in Quinta do Campo, Fundão. Portugal fights against hundreds of furious forest fires that have been swept through the country in recent weeks, part of a wave of deadly burning South Europe.

In one Post on Facebook The Portuguese Firefighters League wrote: “The League of Portuguese firefighters (LBP) regrets the death of a firefighter of the Covilhã volunteers and the serious injuries caused the remaining elements that were the victim of the destroyed vehicle in which they started fighting the fires.
“The LBP will soon make a statement, but sends a strong hug of condolences to the family of the deceased firefighter and the Covilhà voluntary firefighters Humanitarian Association.”
Almost 4,000 firefighters were deployed in Portugal, supported by aircraft and emergency teams from neighboring Spain, to combat the forest fires. The government has expanded and warned its high risk alert that more blazes can flare up as burning heat and strong winds continue.
Elsewhere, Spain, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey, Italy and Bulgaria have all seen hot temperatures and huge forest fires that sweep in their country so far.
