The Firebirds defeated the Calgary Wranglers in overtime Friday night at the Scotiabank Saddledome by a final score of 5-4. Coachella Valley trailed 4-2 with 15 minutes left in the third period and scored three straight goals capped off by an overtime winner from Jacob Melanson.
Coachella Valley found itself in an early 2-0 hole when Clark Bishop and Rory Kerins each scored for the Wranglers in the first 8:08 of the game. Jakov Novak found a response for the Firebirds, scoring a power play goal. Mitchell Stephens earned the lone assist on Novak’s first AHL goal.
Calgary extended its lead to 3-1 midway through the second period on a goal from Matvei Gridin.
Jagger Firkus pulled Coachella Valley within just 2:58 of the third period with a freestyle. Calgary scored briefly to regain their two-goal lead, but right back Logan Morrison answered with another Firebirds power play strike to make it 4-3. Firkus scored his second of the game with 2:32 left, tying the score at 4-4.

After a save from Victor Ostman early in overtime, Jacob Melanson came on a breakaway and beat Wranglers goalkeeper Owen Say to win the game for the Firebirds, completing their second two-goal comeback in as many games.
Tyson Jugnauth had three assists for Coachella Valley and Jagger Firkus recorded his second consecutive three-point game.
Nikke Kokko (13 saves on 15 shots) left the game injured after the first period and was replaced by Victor Ostman (20 saves on 23 shots). Ostman earned the win as the Firebirds improved to 2-2-1-0 to start the 2025-2026 season.
Coachella Valley finished the game 2-for-4 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill. The Firebirds were defeated 37-26 by the Wranglers.
