MASON, OHIO – The Canadian open finalists Victoria Mboko and Naomi Osaka have withdrawn from the Open Cincinnati.
After playing in the final in Montreal on Thursday evening, it was announced on Friday that both no longer played in the tournament. Mboko, an 18-year-old Canadian who won the first WTA title of her career during the 1000-level event event for a home crowd, called a left-wing injury for her decision. Osaka, who had played in her first final of 1000 level since 2022, was mentioned as a “change of schedule”, according to De Cincinnati Open.
After her 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over Osaka on Thursday, Mboko revealed that she had injured her wrist during her semi-final and had undergone an MRI earlier in the day. Mboko told reporters that she would probably not play in Cincinnati as a precaution.
“I just want to take care of my wrist now, and I think it’s just very close and suddenly for me to go there and play again, I think in two days,” said Mboko. “I think I’m just sitting there and preparing myself for the upcoming tournaments.”
Both not -saddled on the Cincinnati Open, Mboko and Osaka had been given performance in the second round after reaching the Canadian Open -Final. Due to the new extensive sizes of 1000 levels tournaments and the overlap between the two events, both would otherwise have to play their first round match on Friday in Cincinnati.
With their absence in the tournament, however, two first round games have now been added to Friday’s schedule in Cincinnati with four happy losers of qualifying. Cristina Bucsa and Yuan Yue replace Mboko and her performance bye in the draw, and the winner of their match will be confronted in the second round with no. 14 Seed Diana Shnaider. Solana Sierra and IVA Jovic take the place of Osaka, and the winner of their collision will then record no. 20 Seed Linda Noskova.
While Mboko and Osaka were not sown who came in the Cincinnati Open, who started on Thursday, she is both expected to be sown at the upcoming US Open after their strong performance in Montreal. Mboko, who was outside the top 300 at the start of the year, is now on a career-high no. 24. Osaka is currently number 25, her highest show since the return of pregnancy leave at the start of the 2024 season.
