It’s the worst-kept secret: one of Manchester United’s biggest transfer priorities this year is strengthening their midfield.
Reports from The Peoples Person have now revealed that Casemiro will leave in the summer. His impending departure, coupled with Manuel Ugarte’s problems and the glaring need to strengthen United’s engine room given that they have signed just two central midfielders in the last seven years, has increased the appetite for new talent in that area.
Persistent transfer links in midfield
Persistent rumors of midfield reinforcements continue to circulate, with some of the top talents repeatedly linked to United.
The last name to be linked is Felix Nmecha of Borussia Dortmund.
Apparently the Dortmund star is widely seen as Germany’s next Michael Ballackhas really caught the attention of the twenty-time English champions this season due to his brilliance.
Would Dortmund really let the next Ballack walk away so easily?
According to a report from The Peoples Person, Dortmund appears reluctant to approve his departure.
Nevertheless, the same report highlighted that continued pressure from suitors could ultimately force the German side’s hand, with a €60 million deal already mooted.
Just as attention turned to whether Manchester United would convert their interest into an official offer, a new twist emerged.
Chelsea blown away by Nmecha
INEOS may have hoped that only they would push hard for the former City midfielder, but it has now emerged that they are not alone in the pursuit.
Sky Germany, via Buli newsclaim Chelsea are equally impressed with Nmecha. They report:
“Another English Premier League club has reportedly joined the race for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Felix Nmecha. Chelsea are monitoring the 25-year-old, who has previously been linked with Manchester United.”
With Chelsea forcing their way into the conversation, the stage is set for a fierce transfer battle between two Premier League giants.
And as both clubs prepare to battle for the Bundesliga star, Nmecha himself remains tight-lipped about a possible return to England:
“I’m not going to say now whether I want to play in the Premier League or not,” he admitted on Tuesday before Dortmund’s 2-0 defeat by Tottenham.
Unfinished business in England
After Pep Guardiola once denied him the chance to shine in England, he sent him to Wolfsburg. Nmecha should certainly feel like he has unfinished business in the Premier League.
Packaged as a physically imposing, technically adept box-to-box midfielder, he seems tailor-made for English football.
Whoever secures his signature, Chelsea or United, will land an exceptional player. For United, however, this feels like a battle they cannot afford to lose.
