Blackburn Rovers face the very real threat of relegation from the Championship when they face Sheffield Wednesday. A dismal run of results has seen them drop to 22nd, deep in the bottom three.

Valerien Ismael has been clear about his intention to strengthen the squad, but with the clock ticking towards Monday’s 7pm deadline, Rovers are in a race against time to complete their final business.

After another defeat at the hands of Hull City this weekend, Rovers are likely to be busy ahead of the deadline. The midweek match is a huge opportunity to secure some points for Ismael and his team.

Sheffield Wednesday recent difficulties are well documented, with relegation from the Championship all but confirmed. The Owls are bottom of the division, 37 points adrift of safety.

Henrik Pedersenwho was previously part of Danny Rohl’s coaching staff, was given the managerial role, but has only one league win to his name. His team recently suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Wrexham.

Predictions News

It’s been a terrible 2026 so far for SWFC, who are yet to score in all competitions. They have lost every match so far this calendar year.

Here, a handful of our writers make their predictions for the game…

Charlie Hodgson

“Sheffield Wednesday will be hoping to add to their squad ahead of this game. They will take whatever positives they can get from the games before the end of the season, but this will certainly be one they feel they can take something from.”

“As for Blackburn Rovers, this is a must-win game. If you don’t get anything from this SWFC team, they will be in big trouble at the end of the season.”

“I think the home side will win this game in fairness to Rovers. I can’t say I’m too confident about it though. I just feel like someone like Todd Cantwell could take the game by the scruff of the neck.”

Prediction: Blackburn Rovers 2-0 Sheffield Wednesday

James Ray

“Blackburn Rovers have had a terrible season. The form they are in means there will be no confidence that they can get a result despite playing against one of the weakest sides in the history of the Championship.”

“Sheffield Wednesday is a bare team with player departures and injuries, leaving Pedersen with little to no hope this season. Add to that the mentally taxing administrative situation and there is no easier opponent than them this season.”

“Having said that, SWFC have been able to get away with a draw here and there. With Rovers also a struggling side and the mood at Ewood Park incredibly sour, there is a chance the visitors will get a point here.

“But ultimately I think the hosts will have enough to get the win they need. If not, the fear of relegation will only increase.”

Prediction: Blackburn Rovers 1-0 Sheffield Wednesday
