The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) in Punjab has challenged Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for an open debate about their demands on 10 March. The decision was made after an emergency meeting on Thursday in Ludhiana.
The SKM stated that its demands are specific to Punjab and Claims claims rejected that these issues fall under the jurisdiction of the central government. It announced that protests will be kept outside the houses of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs and ministers on 10 March from 11 am to 3 pm. Joint meetings of coordination committees at district level are planned for 7 March. The next SKM meeting will take place on March 15 in Chandigarh.
The protests at different locations in Punjab, which started on Wednesday, ended on Thursday. The SKM accused the Punjab police to prevent farmers from reaching Chandigarh for a planned weekly sit-in. Several checkpoints were set up in the entire state and safety was tightened up on all entry points to the trade union area.
The SKM, a coalition of more than 30 farmers groups, had called for the SIT-in to stimulate different requirements, including the purchase of six crops at a minimum support price (MSP) by the state government. SKM leader Buta Singh Burjgill said: “Our 18 requirements were only related to the Punjab government. What they (monkey leaders) say that our requirements only relate to the center is incorrect.”
Bharti Kisan Union (Lakhowal) General Secretary Harinder Singh Lakhowal said: “The monkey government did not allow us to move to Chandigarh.” He criticized the government for preventing the protest and announced that the SKM would increase demonstrations on Wednesday.
The SKM said that many of its requirements, which were previously accepted by the Punjab government, remain unfulfilled. These include MSP for six crops BasMati, corn, potatoes, potatoes, cauliflower and peas and compensation for the families of farmers who died during the 202021 protests. The group also demands that debt relief, ownership rights for land files, payment of back -standing payments and Zaden action.
On Tuesday, Mann criticized farmers’ organizations and accused them of keeping frequent protests that disturb the state. Conversations between the Punjab government and the SKM broke on Monday.
