Farewell to the wizard: Chris Woakes could pronounce spells, but let his cricket talk about Ali Martin

AAt the time, probably, Chris Woakes Dapper walked outside to hit the oval in August, arm in a pendulum, crowd on their feet, his last act was like an English cricket player. Grinning because of the pain of a disrupted shoulder, it provided front page news and a suitable, albeit ignorant, exit.

Few test career are given ends such as Stuart Broad’s Mic Trop on the same soil, or the sentimental farewell schedules for Jimmy Anderson or Alastary Cook. But this matched Woakes: Full Circle on the site of his test debut 12 years earlier and the team still placed in the first place.

England pushed hard for more pace of their hopeful, but this initially endangers its natural swing and seam movement.

Just when it seemed as if it might never happen for him-a chastisance tour through South Africa in 2015-16 led to a series of criticism of the season that changed everything. An injury for Ben Stokes opened a place and woakes, fresh from a career-best nine-fer for Warwickshire, and supported by Cook, really to fruition.

The audience was not only won by a summer that ended when he was mentioned as one of Wiseden’s Cricketers of the Year, including 11 Wickets against Pakistan near Lord’s to start something of a love affair to the ground. But Woakes was always grateful that he shared a dressing room with all three, while the decision of Ein Morgan to present Anderson and Broad presented an alternative path at the start of his White -Ball project in 2015. As the two big ones specialized, Woakes spread his wings as an all-embracing player and the attack leader for Morgan’s all-all-conquering side.

A family man who met his wife, Amie, at school, Woakes has never praised controversy and was generally recognized as one of the nicest boys on the circuit. Even his only slip-up for 15 years of media interactions saying that Jofra Archer’s Late World Cup call-up may not be “honest” on the man to miss a case of trying to start a charged question.

Woakes had his cricket in the head, which often turned out to be irresistible in English conditions. Just ask Australia, who, for all focus on Broad’s Barriagtregschepende farewell in 2023, was mainly reversed by the wizard of Warwickshire on the day.

Two years later, Woakes said goodbye to the same phase, poor in a pendulum and an ovation that the man recognized just like the moment. After a career that always placed England first, he leaves with his head.
