Matthew Golden earned a glowing review after glowing review in Green Bay Packers Training Camp.
Shifty feet, elite speed and hands so good that you could throw a greased watermelon out of a moving car and he would still come down with it. And that is a positive sign, because if you are the first broad receiver of a franchise that is selected in the first round since 2002, there will be enormous pressure.
The Packers took 23rd general in the NFL design of 2025, despite its limited sample size at the university on both Texas And Houston (175 collegial goals). Given that Christian Watson will miss a part of the season while he is recovering from a torn ACL and that Golden was running a 40-year dash time of 4.29 seconds, it is easy to assume that the Rookie will be the plug-and-play man for taking the top of a defense.
But he might just be the plug-and-play-man for everything.
Since 2022, the receiving corps of Green Bay has exercised players for those who have been carved distinctive roles: Romeo Doubs is the owner, Jayden Reed does most of the Jet Sweep stuff, Watson serves as the deep threat, and so on. It is the long way to say that since Davante Adams the packers have not had real no. 1 Alfa receiver.
They do that now. Although Golden was often stabbed in a box as the new deep threat of Jordan Love, the Texas Wideout registered an average of 12.7 meter average goal depth of the target in 2024, comfortable in the middle of receivers with at least 50 goals, and registered Elite PFF qualities in both intervening (90.0). Of his 41 catches last season, 14 came in short routes, 12 came on intervening routes and seven were as a deep shots.
It shows a distribution of work for Golden, and that although he will definitely get the top of a defense – he has registered a 96.0 pff figure on the routes 20 Yards and has registered in last season – he will not be limited to that work, nor should Packer’s head coach Matt Lafleur have to limit his new Passcatcher in that way.
While Golden mainly came out in Texas last season (299 Snaps), he also registered 93 Slot -Snaps. Golden is not going to win at 6 feet and 195 pounds by being physical. His physical profile is similar to that of Ravens Pass-Catcher Zay Flowers (5-foot-9 and 182 pounds), and flowers registered more than 60% of his snaps wide in 2024. Flowers has had back-to-back 100-plus targets, because it is introduced in 2023 in 2023. Go-to-play maker for love becomes and the Green Bay attack runs through him.
Since he became the heir of the Quarterback throne of Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay, Love has not had any recipient Command 100 goals, and the packers have not had a 100-plus target-man since Adams’ monstrous 166 in 2021.
Speaking of love, the Packers Signal caller has forced a campaign with injuries due to injuries, but still managed a solid 77.7 PFF-algae figure. That is a step down than his 83.0 marking in 2023, when he illuminated the defense through the piece and in the play -offs. Love also registered only 16 large throws in 2024 after collecting 34 in 2023. The jury is still at where the consistent level of love is or even if he has one. But if he can put together a season square in the middle of his 2023 -Run and his 2024 campaign, with hot stripes as he has shown, then the packers have a quarterback with whom they can win -and someone who can consistently get the ball on all three levels of the field.
Love’s figures would have been better if recipients of Green Bay had not started so badly. Ironically, the Packers’ Pass Catchers had a stunning 28 drops last season. While Golden has fought drop problems in the past and posted a drop percentage of 13.3% in 2023, he only registered two drops in 2024. If the reports from the camp are something to enter into, those special hands will catch many of the passes of Jordan Love.
The recipients of the packers have been fine, but their milquetoast results against the best secondaries in the largest games are a problem that the total cannot overcome. Only Reed (76.5) and Running Back Josh Jacobs (91.1) earned a better than average PFF-alarm in Packers’ wildcard loss for the Philadelphia Eagles. That shortage is the reason that they applied as early as they did after they had taken the position in the first round earlier.
The media story about the approach of the packers has become comfortable – they are a group effort and everyone plays a role. That will stop in 2025, because Golden has everything to collect more than 100 goals and to go more than 1,000 meters as the new leading man of Green Bay.
