The question we asked Newcastle United fans yesterday (Sunday, December 28, 2025) was: How would you feel if Eddie Howe and Newcastle United parted ways now?
We are now four and a half months into the 2025/26 season and almost at the end of 2025.
Last month also marked the fourth anniversary of Eddie Howe’s arrival at St James’ Park.
After saving Newcastle United from what seemed certain relegation when he arrived in November 2021, his three full seasons under this NUFC Head Coach have been eventful.
Two Wembley finals, two successful Champions League qualifying campaigns, plus of course a trophy.
This 2025/26 season has been up and down so far.
Eddie Howe and his Newcastle United side have played 27 games, with 12 wins, 6 draws and 9 defeats.
Breaking that…
In the Premier League there are 18 games, 6 wins, 5 draws, 7 losses.
However, it was a smooth passage to a Carabao Cup semi-final for the third time in four seasons, just one round away from a third Wembley final in four years.
In the Champions League, Eddie Howe and his team have collected ten points in six games so far, putting them in a great position to at least reach the play-offs for the last 16 knockout stages.
We just wanted to get a snapshot of what Newcastle United fans think about Eddie Howe at the moment.
Fierce debates now seem to follow every match over where Newcastle United currently stand, including the best way forward.
Social media is rarely the best guide to what Newcastle United’s fanbase thinks, because it’s usually the case that those who shout the loudest, who are the most extreme, get the most attention. Moreover, many Newcastle United fans are of course not even active on social media.
Much of the discussion is of course about Eddie Howe, the boss of the Newcastle United team.
What do fans really think?
That’s why we ask this question to Newcastle United fans: what word would best describe your reaction if this happened today…?
How would you feel if Eddie Howe and Newcastle United parted ways right now? We gave fans the following six options, from one extreme (Ectatic) to the other (Devastated), with four between these extremes.
1% Ecstatic
3% Very satisfied
12% satisfied
24% Disappointed
25% Very unhappy
35% destroyed
Many thanks to the more than 3,000 Newcastle United fans who took the time to vote to tell us how you would feel if Eddie Howe left now.
As mentioned above, it’s often very difficult to gauge with certainty online, especially due to the noise on social media, what exactly the consensus among fans is on any topic.
Now that thousands of Newcastle United fans have voted and made their feelings known, I think this is a pretty decent snapshot of the real majority, those who rarely/never share their thoughts online.
I didn’t know exactly how this vote would go, you never know for sure.
A whopping 84% make it clear they want Eddie Howe to stay, while 60% say they would be devastated or very unhappy if the NUFC Head Coach were to leave now, which is overwhelming.
Only 16% say they would prefer Eddie Howe to leave now AND of those, only 3% choose the strong options: very happy or ecstatic.
This poll result showing how thousands of Newcastle United fans feel about Eddie Howe obviously doesn’t mean the time will never come when it might be best for him to part ways with NUFC.
However, I feel that this survey result supports my views and what I hoped the vast majority of other Newcastle United fans would think. That it is ridiculous to think that Eddie Howe’s departure now would be positive for ourselves and our team and our club, that instead it is a matter of at least the rest of this season and then taking stock.
