As is often the case in the week following the Winter Meetings, since we returned from Orlando there has been a flurry of transactions for us to discuss at FanGraphs. So many relief pitchers came off the board. The Padres have re-signed Michael King on Thursday night, as Meg’s Seahawks staged an absolutely stupid comeback against my Rams; San Diego followed that up yesterday by signing a Korean infielder with the musical name, Visual. The Twins signed earlier this week Jos Bell to hit in the middle of their order, as the Phillies added Adolis Garcia to replace the right fielder Nick Castellanoswho is technically still on the roster, but certainly won’t be once the season starts. The two movements inspired Michael Baumann to compare them to babies who put everything they see into their mouths. Sweet.
Two major trades were lost yesterday. Eric Longenhagen will keep you updated on the Rays-Orioles trade that has taken place Shane Baz to Baltimore as Brendan Gawlowksi analyzed the three-team trade between the Rays, Pirates and Astros. Of course, there are still a number of high-profile free agents, including four of the top five on Ben Clemens’ Top 50 list and six of the top 10.
We won’t put any of that in today’s mailbag; you can find all the relevant buzz in Jon Becker’s latest edition of the Matrix Reloaded column. Instead, we’ll answer your questions about ranking players with the most WAR who never made an All-Star team, whether baseball should use WPA when a pitcher wins, the liquidation, and more. But first let me remind you that this mailbag is exclusive to FanGraphs members. If you are not yet a member and would like to read more, you can register for membership here. It’s the best way to experience the site and support our employees, and it comes with a lot of other great benefits.
