Annapolis, md. (AP) – A message on an anonymous chat platform activated A Lockdown at the US Naval Academy This week, and the authorities who investigated what turned out to be a false report from a shooter, shot and then injured a Midshipman who had seen them as a threat, a military officer said Friday.
The basis that the Academy organizes went in Lockdown on Thursday around 5 pm after it got a threat. However, the civil servant said that the threat was not real – it came from a computer from a former Midshipman who was later confirmed to be in another part of the country. The official spoke on condition of anonymity to speak freely about a continuous investigation.
The false report comes in the midst of fear about a wave of recent violence in schools throughout the country, including the Murder of conservative activist Charlie Kirk on a Utah College. A Shoot at a high school in Denver This week two students were injured and the shooter dead, while A shooting at a Catholic school of Minneapolis Two children died and 17 were injured a little more than two weeks ago.
During the Lockdown at the Naval Academy on Thursday, the Navy said in a statement at the time that it responded to “reports of threats”, but that the lock was “out of an abundance of caution”.
The police were seen near Bancroft Hall, which houses Midshipmen in more than 1,600 dorms. According to the school’s website, it is considered the largest dormitory in the world.
Online speculation and wrong information led to reports that varied from an attacker dressed in a police uniform to various injured Midshipmen.
Colin Campbell, a student at nearby St. John’s College, said that after 5 pm he heard several alarms go to the academy and warned of an “active threat” about speakers.
“It was extraordinarily loud, several speakers went off at the same time,” said Campbell, who ran near the academy at the time.
About 90 minutes after the Lockdown came into effect, the deputy commander of the school e -mailed them and told them that while law enforcement worked to secure the school, a Midshipman confused the police for a threat and had involved them, according to the official.
The civil servant added that the Midshipman was armed with a paradegeweer and hit an officer. Law enforcement, in turn, shot the Midshipman and hit him in the arm. The account was previously reported by the New York Times.
Hours later, at 9:40 PM, a Navy declaration confirmed that there was no threat of an active shooter and that one person with a helicopter was flown with injuries, but was in a stable state. The Lockdown was lifted shortly after midnight.
The wounded Midshipman was released from the hospital, the Academy said in a statement on Friday. A member of the Naval Security Force also received minor injuries, the academy said, and was treated in a hospital before he was released.
“A full investigation into the incident is underway with NCIS and Legal Enforcement,” the Academy said in a press release.
Lucille Trott, who goes to St. John’s College and lives on the other side of the Academy, described hearing the warnings and what followed as a frightening experience after a week of rifle in the country.
“On 9/11, the week we have had, so many shootings, so much gun violence, I have the feeling that there must now be a big shift in only the climate,” Trott said. “It all makes only one big pressure cooker.”
