David Craig is a lifelong friend of my father’s and one of the most decent, genuine men I have had the pleasure of meeting.
A few weeks ago he came to Comber, County Down, to visit my father, who is unwell, and to see fellow Fairs Cup legend Willie McFaul / Iam McFaul in Antrim Hospital.
I had a good time catching up with David when he was over.
Last (Saturday) evening, after he returned from playing a few holes of golf, we spoke on the phone again.
With various discussions, ranging from family matters to the sad death of Iam.
I asked David Craig; What can you say about Willie McFaul?
“I am honored that both myself and Bobby Moncur are coming to Coleraine for Willie’s funeral, to represent not only the Fairs Cup team but also the club.”
I know teammates are close, but were you especially close because of the Northern Ireland aspect?
“I worked with Willie throughout our career and had great regard for him, both as a professional and as a person.”
When did you first meet?
“I first met Willie in 1960 when he was at Newcastle United for training and when we got home I said to Willie: see you soon for pre-season.
“Willie never arrived, signing for Linfield instead, and indeed in 1966 he met me for pre-season, just six years too late!
“We traveled the world together for years, housemates and compatriots, and of course we were in the winning team of the Fairs Cup in ’69.
“In Northern Ireland, Pat Jennings was the dominant goalkeeper and denied Willie many caps, but his talent was real, top-shelf and a top man at that.”
How was he social?
“He was good company, good-humoured, quick-witted and a dear friend.”
