In an important step to tackle the growing crisis in the field of mental professionals, the Federation of All India Medical Association (Faima) has launched a free helpline for mental health care (MHRH) for doctors and medical students throughout the country. The helpline is intended to offer free and confidential mental health care support to healthcare professionals who struggle with stress, burnout and emotional challenges.
The initiative comes in the midst of rising cases of suicides among doctors and medical students. In July, a young doctor from the JJ hospital of Mumbai tragically ended his life, which emphasized the urgent need for accessible mental health care. Despite the Mental Healthcare ACT, 2017, which recognizes mental health as a basic right, consciousness and support mechanisms for doctors remain insufficient.
De Helplijn, conceited by Dr. Sajal Bansal from Nagpur, was launched under the leadership of Dr. Akshay Dongardive, the president of Faima and a senior doctor in the Nair Hospital in Mumbai, together with Faima chairman Dr. Manish Jangra. More than 50 psychiatrists from all over India have presented themselves to offer support to medical students, resident doctors and health workers 24 hours a day.
Speaking of the initiative, Dr. said Dongardive: “Doctors are constantly under enormous pressure as a result of increasing stress on the patient, long working hours and academic challenges. Unfortunately, the mental health of those who save lives is often neglected. This helpline is an attempt to offer timely psychological help and to prevent extreme steps such as suicide.”
De Helplijn works 20 hours a day, seven days a week and offers consultations in multiple languages, including English, Hindi, Marathi, Bengals, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Gujarati, Urdu and Punjabi. Every day a dedicated team of psychiatrists will be available in services to ensure that medical professionals from different regions and language backgrounds can comfortably seek help.
Faima has also entered doctors, including Dr. JAIDEEP CHAUDHARY (Jharkhand), Dr. Srinath (Andhra Pradesh) and Dr. Sagnik Mukherjee (Kolkata), as important coordinators for the service. Doctors from Maharashtra, together with various other states, actively contribute to this collective effort, Dr. Bansal.
With this initiative, Faima is planning to expand its reach to Resident -doctors, MBBS students and health workers in government and private institutions.
Dr. Bansal said: “With rising cases of depression, fear and burnout in medicines, Faima believes that the Helpline could become thousands of lifeline in the brotherhood. This initiative emphasizes the urgent need to give priority to the mental well-being of care providers, for which those who save lives have access and support of the most.”
