West Brom head coach Eric Ramsay’s start has quickly deteriorated from bad to an absolute nightmare.
from West Brom 5-0 thrashing by Norwich City ensured that any doubts about the Baggies’ possible involvement in a relegation battle are now a reality.
Erik RamsayThe Wales side are three points above the drop zone, with WBA conceding eight goals in the Welshman’s two games in charge.
The 34-year-old has a task on his hands that is far more important than any West Brom fan could have feared. With a team lacking in confidence and spirit, it is difficult to see where the next three points will come from.
West Brom’s poor form stems from the hustle and bustle of late summer activities
It quickly became clear that this team is not capable of performing in Ramsay’s favored 3-4-3 system. The back line of Chris Mepham, Nat Phillips and Charlie Taylor were dragged out of position too easily, while also suffering from a lack of protection from the rest of the WBA squad.
So far, Mikey Johnston, Isaac Price and Jed Wallace have been experimented as potential right-backs – and none of them have seemed comfortable. This has compounded the glaring roster problem created by the lack of suitable replacements for Darnell Furlong and Tom Fellows.
Despite his mistakes, Furlong was at least comfortable playing as a right back or further forward as a right wing-back. The same can’t be said for George Campbell and Alfie Gilchrist all season long.
Samuel Iling-Junior has faced a lot of criticism during his time at The Hawthorns. However, there is a fair argument to be made that in the two games in which Ramsay was in charge, he was the only player who felt comfortable playing in a more natural left-back role – rather than the right-wing cover he was given to replace Fellows.
The sale of Furlong and Fellows is said to have been seen as necessary by West Brom’s hierarchy amid their ongoing battle with PSR. However, Ramsay’s appointment has added to the poor attempt to replace the aforementioned duo.

Eric Ramsay needs to be flexible, but needs reinforcement from the West Brom squad
With the threat of a relegation battle looming over The Hawthorns, West Brom’s hierarchy cannot afford to be complacent. It became clear that the board had one eye on things from next season Statement by Andrew Nestor at the end of December. However, the escalating situation means they must take action now.
The signing of Toby Collyer’s loan has increased the need for an additional midfielder – which some argue was already an area in need of strengthening – while the recent midfield injury crisis hasn’t helped either.
While Ramsay might have preferred a back three or five system at Minnesota United, it is very clear that WBA does not have the players to pull this off. The new boss must avoid putting square pegs in round holes and return to form to get the best out of his team.
Unfortunately for Ramsay, he doesn’t get any favors from the schedule. The Baggies travel to Pride Park on Friday evening, meaning he will have little time on the training ground as he attempts to turn around Albion’s fortunes.
