‘Factually incorrect and baseless news’ – BCCI secretary denies reports of Gautam Gambhir being sacked as head coach

Denying the ongoing media reports surrounding the dismissal of Gautam Gambhir as head coach of Team India, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has falsified the claims. It had previously emerged that the board has found Gambhir incompetent, especially in Tests after the Indian team suffered defeats to Australia in an away match while being whitewashed by South Africa and New Zealand.

Notably, there were media reports confirming that Gambhir will remain India’s coach only in the white-ball formats, while someone will take the reins in Test cricket. The head of the Center of Excellence Plumber Laxman was known to be the frontrunner to take up the job, which the former Indian cricketer had denied, as he had done earlier. Now Saikia has also denied the claims.

“This is completely false news. This is completely speculative news. Some very reputed news agencies are also reporting the news. There is no truth in it. BCCI immediately denies. People can think whatever they want, but BCCI has not taken a single step. This is someone’s fabrication; there is no truth in it, and I cannot say anything other than this is factually incorrect and baseless news,” Saikia said, as quoted by Times Now.

India announce squad for New Zealand ODIs

Meanwhile, Gambhir will continue as coach of the Indian team for the upcoming series against New Zealand and the 2026 T20 World Cup that follows. The squad for the three-match ODI series against the BlackCaps is expected to be announced on or before Sunday, January 4, as the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee will meet for the announcement.

If reports are to be believed, wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan is set to make a comeback to the ODI squad after more than two years, replacing his Under-19 batchmate Rishabh Pant. On the other hand, Vice Captain Shreyas Iyer You can also see him making a comeback to professional cricket after a threatened injury during the Australia Series.
