An encouraging debut from Internal Affairs has Brad Widdup optimistic the colt will make an appearance at the Inglis Nursery.

Brad Widdup is banking on a combination of racing experience and a low draw to help Internal Affairs achieve a victory over the board of the listed Inglis nursery in Randwick.

With a purchase of $440,000, the son of Home Affairs is the second most expensive yearling in Saturday’s 1000m, behind the $1.2 million purchase of Vatican, who is making his debut in the race.

Internal Affairs fought bravely for fourth place behind Fireball in his only start last month, when he worked early to deliver a cross from a wide draw.

Widdup gave the two-year-old every opportunity to indicate he was ready for the paddock, but when he continued to flourish the Hawkesbury trainer opted to move on.

“I thought, should I tip him or just tick him for this race to see how he comes through? He came through really well so it was kind of a no-brainer to go around,” Widdup said.

“It’s good prize money, not a large field. He really has enough capabilities.”

Internal Affairs has drawn barrier three and with his natural gate speed, Widdup expects him to be handy.

However, he is keen for Tom Sherry to find cover and with six of the 11 first starters, Widdup hopes his youngster can capitalize on his racing experience and make his presence felt.

“He’s a pretty simple animal. He would have learned a lot the other day,” Widdup said.

“Unless you get something out of the box that is really good, racing experience always helps.”

Widdup will also be represented at Randwick by last start winner Hyperbolic in the In Memory of Sam Kavanagh Handicap (1600m) and is optimistic she can continue her work.

“We’ve been very patient with her, and now that she’s at this age, she should be ripe to get her grades,” he said.

“She is a sweet mare and I am confident that she can continue with it.”

The four-year-old has won four of her 12 starts and Tommy Berry has stuck with her after co-teaming her to victory at Rosehill last month.
