There is enough uncertainty to go this year, including a global trade war, the shifting of policy priorities and an economy that starts to stumble. Breakthrough energyA Climate Tech organization founded by Bill Gates has also been shifted in response.
The group has always placed long bets, although it will appreciate some of them again. The policy team was Enchanted in MarchFor example, and it did not continue to finance a publication that dealt with the world of climate technology. Nevertheless, his investments in startups continue, just like his longest bet, a Fellowship program for budding entrepreneurs.
Breakthrough Energie -FellowsAs the program is called today, a new cohort announces, Techcrunch has been learned exclusively. It consists of 45 fellows at 22 different startups, and the makeup shows how the program evolves, both in response to its own data and to global uncertainty.
‘It’s the most global [cohort] that we have had so far. Fifty percent of the teams are located outside the US, ”said Ashley Grosh, vice -president at Breakthrough Energy, to Techcrunch.
Grosh and her colleagues had to search around 1500 applications and references, making the program more selective than the world’s top universities. Eleven teams are located in the US, six are in Asia and the rest are in Canada, Germany, the UK and South Africa.
Part of the international focus was driven by a new hub for the Fellowship program in Singapore, which the organization opened in August 2024 with Temasek, the investment fund of the Land and Enterprise Singapore, a government agency.
But it is also a recognition that requires climate change, a worldwide problem, solutions from all over the world.

“What are local needs, right? What are the local challenges?” Said Grosh. As an example, she points to the fact that different cohort members work on hydrogen.
In Asia, “there is a lot of interest in the hydrogen economy,” Grosh noted. Circularity, or recycling materials back to their original form, or better, is also a priority for the region, given its role as a global factory and all the waste that entails.
The new cohort also has startups that work on critical minerals, agriculture and rastermodernization.
In addition to his more global focus, the Breakthrough Energy Fellows program has also shifted its curriculum. Based on observations and feedback from previous cohorts, it encourages the new group to think early and often about the economy of the technology they develop. With the help of a framework called Techno-economic analysis, they work with “business fellows”-often entrepreneurs with relevant experience-to determine whether and where their idea product market fits. If not, they will be bumped.
“We saw many companies think that they are going to do one thing, and then she runs,” said Grosh. “They are more bankable as soon as we have helped them through that pivot point and validated.”
Grosh said that almost all teams from the previous four Cohorten have collected follow -up financing, and one, Holocene, has already been abandoned. “That is a huge degree of success for us,” she said.
