Garry screams for a shot at the UFC Welterweight Championship, mauling Usman along the way. Current defending champion Islam Makhachev has admitted he would rather risk his gold against Usman, but Garry believes “The Nigerian Nightmare” is not relevant to 2026.
Speak with Death Row MMAMasvidal had some words for Garry’s disrespect towards Usman (h/t MMAfighting).
“I never thought I’d be here rooting for Usman or anything, but here I am,” Masvidal said on Death Row MMA. “For him to call Usman an ‘is-been’ is so crazy because you’ve never been one, brother. You’re nothing. You could be a contender now and all, you beat Belal. [Muhammad]but to do that you had to poke him twice with his eyes, it wasn’t like you were holding him back. I never see anyone talking about this guy like he deserves the next chance, just him and his wife talking about him deserving the next title.
“Maybe he’s pushing the 40-year-old Usman, but I can still see Usman beating up Ian Garry. Ian Garry isn’t the best welterweight out there, but he was born with some gifts. He’s huge, he’s like a light heavyweight at welterweight. He’s already been rocked by Shavkat, who I think is the most deserving at 170 pounds. I don’t know when he’ll be back, what his injuries are.”
Garry isn’t the only 170-pound contender to emerge. Michael Morales stopped Sean Brady in their UFC 322 fight and is undefeated. Carlos Prates, who Garry has a unanimous decision over, recently knocked out Leon Edwards. Shavkat Rakhmonov is seen as the most intriguing option to fight Makhachev, but he was out for all of 2025 due to injuries.
