A former UFC champion still believes Umar Nurmagomedov would benefit from following his advice.
Nurmagomedov was recently seen in action against Mario Bautista at UFC 321. He earned a unanimous decision victory, which came after Nurmagomedov failed to capture the UFC bantamweight championship in January. Despite the victory, some believe that something was missing from Nurmagomedov’s performance.
During a recent edition of the “JAXXON” podcastTJ Dillashaw once again urged Nurmagomedov to join a renowned strength and conditioning coach (via MMA Junkie).
“I think he’s just surprised by Mario Bautista everywhere. His technique was good, his wrestling technique was good and his cardio is better than Umar’s, I believe,” Dillashaw said on the JAXXON Podcast. “I think we need to get Umar at The Treigning Lab with Sam Calavita to get him in shape so he can get Merab. He’s working really hard. Like, he’s transitioning, he’s working really hard to hold his position. His pace is really, really fast. Most of the time he can challenge people with his pace because he’s technically good, and his pace is great.”
“But if they don’t go out, and you have such a fast pace, it will catch up with you. Especially a guy like Bautista, who has great cardio. Merab is a perfect example. His pace is insane, but his cardio is his best weapon. We have to treat a guy like that scientifically like Sam Calavitta would to take him to the next level so he can challenge Merab to the fullest, because Merab won’t get tired. I think he Umar has a better technique and the same pace. He just has that now last cardio weapon needed to keep up with Merab.’
Dillashaw initially shared this advice after Nurmagomedov’s loss to Dvalishvili. Nurmagomedov has yet to make such a change in his camp.
Reigning UFC middleweight champion Khamzat Chimaev enlisted the help of Calavita and he fought all five rounds against Dricus du Plessis without any problems. While some may argue that Chimaev’s cardio wasn’t really tested in the fight due to his grounding “Stillknocks,” it remains an impressive performance.
