Ex-Twin likely to break MLB postseason record in World Series Game 7 after tie

Former twin Louis Varland ties MLB record with Blue Jays and will likely break it during World Series Game 7

When Blue Jays righty Louis Varland entered the seventh inning of World Series Game 6 against the Los Angeles Dodgers to relieve starting pitcher Kevin Gausman, who allowed three earned runs on three hits and two walks while collecting eight strikeouts, the former Twin tied Brandon Morrow (2017) and Paul Assenmacher (1997) for most games (14) in one postseason. Varland had a perfect seventh inning with one strikeout and induced a flyout to Miguel Rojas in the eighth before being replaced by Mason Fluharty. The Blue Jays went on to lose the game by a score of 3-1 in epic fashion to force a Game 7.

In Game 7, it’s all hands on deck for both teams. Fans can expect to see a host of pitchers go head-to-head in the ultimate matchup, as both teams will do everything they can to win and not have to worry about saving pitchers for another game. Therefore, Varland will almost certainly appear at some point during Game 7, whether Toronto is leading or trailing. Varland has struggled a bit in the postseason, allowing seven earned runs in his 14 appearances, but he has still been dominant at times. The Blue Jays acquired Varland as a high-leverage lockdown reliever, so manager John Schneider will want to use him in what will be the biggest game of their lives for most competing players.

Louis Varland and Blue Jays prepare for World Series Game 7

Game 7 of the World Series starts Saturday at 7pm CST at the Rogers Center in Toronto. Future Hall-of-Famer Max Scherzer is set to make the start on the mound for the Blue Jays, while the Dodgers have yet to announce their starting pitcher. Los Angeles could consider starting Shohei Ohtani because the Dodgers want him to pitch at some point, and things will get messy if he comes in as a reliever and Dave Roberts wants to keep his bat in the game.
